FiveM won't launch unless adhesive.dll is not present

Open highclassacts opened this issue 8 months ago • 22 comments

What happened?

FiveM won't launch unless adhesive.dll is NOT present. If the dll is in the FiveM folder, when I launch the executable, it never opens. If I delete adhesive.dll, FiveM launches but can't connect to any servers. There has been, in the past week, an uptick of people reporting issues with launching FiveM on the CFX forums. The only way I can get FiveM to launch properly is to reboot my PC after I notice that FiveM won't launch. Log files are typically empty beyond the first two lines stating:

[ 2109] [b3095_DumpServ] 35596/ DumpServer is active and waiting. [ 2109] [ FiveM] MainThrd/ --- BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Apr 17 21:38:09 2025 ---

Sometimes, it gets as far as this:

[ 1265] [b3095_DumpServ] 37040/ DumpServer is active and waiting. [ 1265] [ FiveM] MainThrd/ --- BEGIN LOGGING AT Thu Apr 17 21:38:45 2025 --- [ 1422] [ FiveM] MainThrd/ hello from "C:\Users\MYNAME\AppData\Local\FiveM\FiveM.exe" [ 1437] [ FiveM] MainThrd/ Got ros:launcher process - pid 37020 [ 1453] [ ROSLauncher] MainThrd/ hello from "C:\Users\MYNAME\AppData\Local\FiveM\FiveM.app\data\cache\subprocess\FiveM_ROSLauncher" ros:launcher --parent_pid=36724 "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Launcher\Launcher.exe" -noRecogniser [ 1500] [ ROSLauncher] MainThrd/ launcher! "C:\Users\MYNAME\AppData\Local\FiveM\FiveM.app\data\cache\subprocess\FiveM_ROSLauncher" ros:launcher --parent_pid=36724 "C:\Program Files\Rockstar Games\Launcher\Launcher.exe" -noRecogniser

before crashing.

Specs: Windows 11 AMD 7800X3D GIGABYTE GEFORCE RTX 4070 TI SUPER WINDFORCE 16GB OC T-Force Delta 32GB 6000MHZ DDR5 RAM ASUS PRIME B650M-A AX6 CEC AM5 MICRO ATX W/ WI-FI 6

Expected result

FiveM.exe, like it has for years, should launch with all proper dlls still in the application folder.

Reproduction steps

  1. FiveM.exe won't launch after turning pc on from full shut down, for some reason.
  2. Delete adhesive.dll.
  3. FiveM.exe now launches, but can't connect to anything.
  4. Close FiveM and readd adhesive.dll to application folder.
  5. Reboot system.
  6. FiveM.exe now works, for some reason.

Importancy

Crash

Area(s)

FiveM

Specific version(s)

FiveM 14297/beta

Additional information

NO, this is NOT because of the Nvidia app and it's game filter setting. I do NOT have the Nvidia app on my pc.

Have you tried running the netsh int ip set global mldlevel=all command in an administrator command prompt? That fixed it for some people

Gogsi avatar Apr 17 '25 21:04 Gogsi

I have and that doesn't work, as I have pointed out on the forums.

highclassacts avatar Apr 17 '25 21:04 highclassacts

While attempting to launch FiveM with a year old version of adhesive.dll, it actually attempts to boot, but crashes, as I expected it would, stating "Error: Unable to resolve dependency for ros-patches[0.0.0.0]". The issue lies, seemingly, with adhesive.dll.

highclassacts avatar Apr 17 '25 22:04 highclassacts

I've tried multiple reinstalls, removing registry edits, deleting my digital entitlements folder in my appdata folder, and the string of code for command prompt people have been sharing, but the only things I can do to get FiveM.exe to launch is a restart (not a shutdown and reboot) and deleting adhesive.dll.

highclassacts avatar Apr 17 '25 22:04 highclassacts

Still occurring.

Was able to run the executable once. It updated, I played for around half an hour. After only a couple of minutes, I tried to start the executable again, but it wouldn't start.

Do you have any crash dumps in the default Windows location (%localappdata%\CrashDumps). If FiveM crashes so early the crash handler isn't initialized, they should go there. Should be in the format of FiveM.<numbers>.dmp

Gogsi avatar May 02 '25 16:05 Gogsi

Nothing in CrashDumps from FiveM.

Is your PC enrolled into an enterprise organization in Windows with the Mobile Device Management functionality? That crash seems to be coming from a dll related to that.

You can check by opening Windows settings, going to Accounts -> Access work or school and check if there's an account listed as "Connect to XXXX". Or alternatively, running the dsregcmd /status command in a CMD window and checking for "AzureAdJoine", "EnterpriseJoined" or "DomainJoined" is listed as YES.

Gogsi avatar May 02 '25 18:05 Gogsi

Another person having the issue. I am also still having the issue.

This is not the issue. I have a series of issues that randomly crop up, including FiveM opening in the background but never creating a window while also lagging my mouse movement.

Still occurring. Pretty pathetic that something this serious and widespread has been ignored for this long.

Don't ask me to do any of the things mentioned in this thread: https://forum.cfx.re/t/fivem-wont-start/5319292

I've done everything suggested already.

FiveM uses the closed-source sv_adhesive component to enforce paid licensing tiers, specifically the "Element Club Argentum" subscription. There is substantial evidence that this component gates functionality like custom clothing streaming for servers with more than 8 players:

The official FiveM documentation (https://docs.fivem.net/docs/server-manual/setting-up-a-server-vanilla/) shows that sv_licenseKey is tied to the licensing system

GitHub issue #71 "Any tips for contributing to FiveM source code?" (https://forum.cfx.re/t/any-tips-for-contributing-to-fivem-source-code/1176169) includes the instruction to "make sure to copy components.json and remove svadhesive" to compile successfully, confirming the component is intentionally excluded.

Using closed-source components to restrict freedoms in a manner contrary to the GPL/LGPL terms represents a violation of these licenses, as it effectively adds restrictions beyond those permitted by the GPL/LGPL.

GitHub issue #71 contains the instruction to "make sure to copy components.json and remove svadhesive" to compile successfully. These issues demonstrate that the software as provided cannot be compiled without modification to work around the missing component.

As provided is the key here, they're in violation of the GPL, by requiring manual removal of those files to compile, violates the GPL.

Until they release the source for those files, we can't fix stupid bugs like this. These issues demonstrate that the software as provided cannot be compiled without modification to work around the missing components nor fix issues in an "open-source" repository.

Still occurring. Was working earlier, now it won't start.

When attempting to launch FiveM, two processes are started then shut down after a few seconds, FiveM and FiveM_b3095_DumpServer.

highclassacts avatar May 23 '25 01:05 highclassacts

It is also opening up windows error reporting, werfault.exe, in the background, but not creating a crash dump.

highclassacts avatar May 23 '25 01:05 highclassacts

I'm glad numerous people who work on this project think it not working for numerous users is a joke and not a sign that something is seriously wrong with the project.

highclassacts avatar May 30 '25 21:05 highclassacts

same issue here, exact same outcome, dont know what the fuck to do (btw how the fuck has citizenfx not fixed this it has been 2 MONTHS holy shit you cant fix a bug that has been affecting numerous users and will not go away if you dont fix it?)

Bro is waiting for a project ran by a multi-billion dollar company to fix their executable. Meme them, not the community they're destroying.

That’s not how that works. Adhesive isn’t covered by the open source license so this violation you mention is nonsense. Adhesive includes measures to stop cheaters and prevents people from joining servers with modified clients which is why the source code isn’t available. If the source was available for adhesive it would be easy to launch into any server with a modified client, ruin the fun for everyone without any detection measures in place. Also you don’t need adhesive for any of the features you mentioned above, you can compile the source code and play by yourself on a server without adhesive with all those features. Anyways, I would suggest being productive above as spamming the topic with “memes” isn’t going to help anybody help you. The issue you mention isn’t widespread, it’s clearly isolated to a very few number of users which is much harder to reproduce to find the core issue. Something on your system has got to be interfering with it, until the cause is found it’s going to be very hard to fix. Since you mentioned you can launch on first boot, try keeping everything closed and stop all your startup apps in task manager and see if it persistently works after that.

It has gotten to the point that I have to have GTA 5 running in the background before I can successfully launch FiveM, and even then it is hit and miss. Most of the time, FiveM doesn't even try to connect to Rockstar Games Services. On a fresh install of both FiveM and GTA 5 with zero modifications, this issue persists. To my knowledge, there is nothing on my PC that would be modifying FiveM's executable or its dlls, at runtime or otherwise. Again, with zero changes to my install of both FiveM and GTA 5, this issue started happening to me four months ago. The team who handles this project has spent more time attacking me than considering looking into the issue I have reported, because it "isn't widespread." Neither WAS the escrow remover tools.

It's better to nip things in the bud by solving issues quickly than to antagonize people who are trying to report issues and provide as much info as possible so that issues can be resolved. It's quite clear that those who maintain this project are more interested in attacking those who want to see the project improve than improving the project and helping the community.

I have given you all the information I have. And it wasn't me "spamming" memes. In fact, I doubt one post about someone posting one meme counts as spam.

Nobody from the CFX team attacked you at all. You also linked possibly every post you could find where someone couldn't launch FiveM without knowing if it's even related to your issue, most the ones you linked were either unrelated or were solved by the command Gogsi mentioned above. You mentioned a crash related to MDMRegistration.dll, did you follow the steps Gogsi mentioned when they brought it up above?
