Feature Request - "Birdmode"

Open chrisale opened this issue 2 years ago • 3 comments

Call it what you like :) but the thought is a mode that mimics the "all-in" timeline of the Bird. I'm sensing a lot of the complaints of Mastodon being 'hard to use' is because of the three timelines (Home/Local/Fed) always being separated and requiring active click to see them.

So create an "all-timelines" column in Mastonaut - and allow perhaps an option to use by default - that is one timeline that combines all three into one stream. (This would also potentially allow more than one account to be seen at once.)

Hmmm, isn't the fedi timeline a bit of an unusable firehose?

I'm not sure this is practical without Bird-like algorithms that filter what they think you're interested in. Having said that, I can see the use case for combining different timelines into one column.

Wouldn't "Fed" already include everything? Except maybe the non-public posts that you can view?

I may simply be showing my ignorance and the Fed timeline ("Public" in Mastonaut) is effectively a catchall for all followed, instance, and federated posts. But then I guess I'd be confused why they're split up in the first place. That said, I think you've (chucker) captured my intent. On the 'unusable firehose' point, absolutely valid, and not just for the fedi timeline but any busy timeline can get too crazy at time. My next request would be to implement a 'slow timeline' and/or 'click to update' feature as is available on the mastodon web interface. :)

Thank you very much for the attention and work. It is appreciated.
