trunk branch vs master branch

What is the purpose of these branches? So far I have based PR on top of trunk. Am I doing the right thing? Do we need both?

title says it all. It should be possible to do, the wiki mentions something seemingly outdated https://navit.readthedocs.io/en/trunk/user/configuration/maps/Csv.html#special-case-igo8-speed-camera-files and it would not have worked for parking spots either.
