Improve sharing

Open jean opened this issue 10 years ago • 10 comments

Currently we have

  • Link to tweet
  • Tweet text

Tweet text has only the text, not the context. E.g. in comparison by default twicca has:

userid (name)
tweet text
date via app
link to tweet

When I share to Pocket from twicca, this enables Pocket to get an article linked in the tweet text, and render it with the tweet for context in the bottom margin.

When I share to Pocket from TweetLanes, Pocket fetches only the twitter page.

I've had a look and to do this we will need to establish the correct intent to put these under so that pocket will correctly pick them up. Unless we are creating just a 4 line bit of text rather than the 1 line status?

If we go down that route, we will need to replace the option to share the 1st URL in the status. since we can only have 3 options showing in that box.

Would it be possible to see how twicca does it and imitate?

From what i can tell twicca is not open source, so their code is not readily available for us to look at.

True, but I was thinking get twicca to share to you, same as how it shares to Pocket, then you can see what it sends. I'm sorry, I'm no Android dev .. this is probably more complicated than I imagine.

to do that we need to know what pocket is listening for. They are also not open source :(

Hmm, I see if I "share this tweet URL" from twicca, Pocket does the right thing. Hey, doing the same thing from TweetLanes just now also worked! So how did I end up with 8 tweets in my Pocket? Possibly a newer Pocket version? I'll keep sharing tweet URLs, and see if I can reproduce.

Awesome to have an OSS twitter client by the way. Hope to be able to contribute something.

that must mean pocket is doing all the clever stuff to lookup from the twitter URL. I'll close this off for now.

I've found that it works to share tweet URL to Pocket while online, but sharing while offline results in Pocket fetching the tweet itself only.

Also, to share to e.g. email, the @account and URL are needed in addition to the text. This allows the receiver to find the tweet context and conversation. Lacking this, it takes two round trips between TweetLanes and the mail /note / chat app to get this info, and the @account needs to be remembered and retyped.

This is what share this tweet from twicca produces (shared to Gmail, to clipboard, and to Catch Notes):

tferriss (Tim Ferriss)

"Why my code and ideas are public" from @sivers http://t.co/CcEQDN3cmq Hat tip to @paddypatpat

9:48 AM Dec 12th via Buffer
http://twitter.com/tferriss/status/411039758903951360

When I share the note with that text from Catch to Pocket while offline, then I get the linked article and tweet context when next online.

We are limited to what we can do for now. To extend this, we need to remove one of the other sharing options.

I'll leave it in the backlog, but not sure how we can do it.

To extend this, we need to remove one of the other sharing options.

Maybe replace "share link in tweet"?

twicca has separate menu items to share tweet and to share each link in the tweet.
