Union versus intersection of highly variable genes

Hi,

I am working with MNN, and was wondering why in the paper sometimes the union of the highly variable genes (HVGs, calculated within batches) is used, whereas other times you use the intersection. I would think that when using the intersection instead of the union, you lose much of the information (=genes) that distinguishes populations unique to one batch from the rest of the cells.
