Night mode not active after app standby

I encounter the following issue after the lattest fdroid update:

In the NET game, the theme changes from night mode to default after the app was send to standby by the os. The settings are still set to night mode on. In order to reactivate the night mode, you have to change the settings to night mode off, leave the settings screen, go back to settings and set night mode on again.

The behaviour started after the lattest update.

Current version: Version 2023-01-18-2324-aaa36328-fdroid OS: Android 8 HW: Samsung Galaxy S7

I tried reproducing this on the emulator and didn't succeed. Could this be Samsung specific? Per https://dontkillmyapp.com, Samsung is quite aggressive with shutting down background apps.
