Lag on 4K monitors

Hi, I am not sure if I am the only one having this issue but I am using compton on a 4K monitor and causes a serious amount of lag. Not sure what the issue might be

compton does work just fine on 4K displays; my main workstation has several of them.

You'll need to provide quite a bit more information if you'd like us to try to help you.

Hey sorry for the lack of info but it's hard to give a lot of information since I haven't actually tracked down the issue to some location in the code but I can give you more information on my setup on which I notice this issue. I am on a thinkpad t540p running Archlinux. I am using a mDP connected to an external 4K monitor. When I watch a video in HD (anythin greather than or equal to 720p, the video is pretty choppy). After I disable compton there is no choppiness anymore. Of course it couldn't that the issue is not directly related to compton...

Please provide more information. What versions of the kernel, X11, and libx11 are you using? What driver and version are you using? Can you post your compton configuration?

I am having the same problem (default config with no changes). The UI is overall much less responsive... Dell Precision 5530

This issue still occurs even on 2.5k monitors.

This issue certainly doesn't occur everywhere; I use two 4K displays without any issues. The information that I asked for in my last comment (and anything else you think might be relevant, such as which WM you're using) will be helpful in starting to figure out why some setups are impacted and some aren't... which might point us at the problem!
