Would it be possible to provide this as a jira plugin which would add another tab to the editor such that we have Visual | Text | Markdown

This would be a great solution. IMHO it should be possible to do this in the browser only. And if one removes the plugin nothing is lost.

I haven't looked much into how JIRA plugins work but I'll try to look into it in the near future. Thanks for the suggestion!
