Webhooks for cookbook events

Open nathenharvey opened this issue 8 years ago • 5 comments

This request came in via the feedback site.

Cookbook events are published to an RSS feed today. Is this sufficient?

We would love to see some additional use cases and get a better understanding of whether or not RSS-feeds can support the goals you have.

Subscribe to all cookbook activity: https://supermarket.chef.io/cookbooks.atom

Subscribe to only activity for the httpd cookbook: https://supermarket.chef.io/cookbooks/httpd.atom

Also available:

Subscribe to only activity for cookbooks followed by a specific user: https://supermarket.chef.io/users/<username>/followed_cookbook_activity.atom

For example, my followed cookbooks as an activity feed.

Closing for now as there has been no conversation for a few months, feel free to re-open.

Did not even know this was here- I was the one that requested the webhook feature over on the feedback site. I would have commented here sooner had I known.

The problem with RSS is its polling based. In our organization we have a lot of chef orgs/pipelines, so polling puts an unnecessary drain on resources, and puts in arbitrary wait times. Being event-driven would be preferable for kicking off pipelines.

Thanks for the additional info @slushpupie. I will reopen this for now and we'll consider it as we do some roadmap planning.
