The checkra1n client will not allow me to enter DFU Mode on my iPad Air but works on every other device I have.
What device + iOS version are you on? iPad Air on iPadOS (iOS) 12.4.3
What checkra1n version are you using? checkra1n 0.9.2
What are the steps to reproduce the issue?
- Connect iPad to the computer
- Open the checkra1n client/booter
- Start jailbreaking. (Device gets stuck on recovery and client will not proceed to give further instructions for entering DFU mode). ...
What do you expect, and what is happening instead?
I expected everything to work flawlessly, my iPad mini (2nd gen, Wifi model) worked completely fine on one attempt. Since they both use the same chipset and architecture, I wonder why it isn't working as expected.
Any other info, error logs, screenshots, ...?
When I boot into DFU beforehand, the client will start the exploit but once it reboots, it will just boot into recovery mode and the exploit will not be applied. The iPad cannot be booted unless iOS is reinstalled or if the user uses ReiBoot to exit out of recovery mode.
Also, error -31 (I believe) appears when jailbreaking but that doesn't seem to have an effect on my jailbroken iPad mini. I'm trying to jailbreak an iPad Air (Wifi)
Does it work with CLI/if you put it into dfu manually?

Same problem here. Put into DFU manually also does not work, stuck at (Exploit failed, Error Code: -31) Can I ask how to do with CLI?
It worked for me when putting the device into DFU manually and then running the CLI (though I needed multiple attempts). On average, I think it took like 5-10 tries to make it successfully exploit and boot to the jailbroken state.
The GUI didn't work great.
I tried booting into DFU beforehand and still to no avail unfortunately. I hope they get this fixed asap.
@datitisev How to run CLI? Is there a tutorial for it ?
DFU and CLI are basically the same (I think)
@drewfissh What do you mean, DFU and CLI are basically the same? DFU is a state on your iOS device, CLI stands for Command-Line Interface, and in this case is when you run the checkra1in app through the command line.
To enter the device into DFU mode on iPad Air
- hold down the Power & Home button for 10 seconds
- then release the power button
- keep holding the home button for about ~5 seconds until iTunes or checkra1n detects the device in DFU mode, then release it.
After booting into DFU mode, both the CLI and GUI should work (I think). I myself used the CLI because it was easier to see the output.
@drewfissh Heading level 3 Support for iPad Air is experimental so it might take several or many tries
Also you should note that checkra1n has no instructions for DFU on experimentally supported devices (At the time of this reply) @drewfissh
I know this is an old thread, but I have an old iPad Air A1475 which is restored, but in a "activation lock" state. I've been trying DFU over and over and I keep getting this:
- [*]: Waiting for DFU devices
- [*]: Exploiting
- [*]: Checking if device is ready
- [*]: Setting up the exploit (this is the heap spray)
- [*]: Right before trigger (this is the real bug setup)
- [*]: Entered download mode
- [*]: Booting...
- [!]: Timed out waiting for bootstrap upload (Likely caused by an incompatible tweak, to enable Safe Mode pass the '-s' option) (error code: -20)
- [!]: Unknown error (error code: -20)
is this still expected on this device?
I think you will get issues if your device is activation locked.Sent from my iPhoneOn 23 Jan 2025, at 1:32 PM, scott-stoltz @.***> wrote: I know this is an old thread, but I have an old iPad Air A1475 which is restored, but in a "activation lock" state.
