This is a good idea for anyone with a non-Retina screen. I've found that it helps with some but not all apps, and (in my experience) hurts none.
In any case, the setting is worth keeping, because AFAICT it _does_ help for when one uses the keyboard to go in and out of MC.
I seem to recall that if tempfiles are avoided, there is no way for vim to properly detect the the encoding of decrypted text during a read. Everything is fine...
