VHS not rendering Bubbletea output

I just tested VHS using this example from Bubbletea. This works perfectly and looks like this:

I then tried recording my custom app which is based on the same example. However, VHS is not rendering the event messages and it looks like this:

Same, and it's quite inconsistent. I was grabbing this GIF for commenting on ANOTHER issue, but found that it would apply here as well. As you can see in the 2nd run of the program, the viewport is just entirely blank. I've been able to get other VHS recordings that properly output both views without changing the tape file at all, so I'm not sure what's contributing
