I was able to show an alert on PageLoad when the alert message doesn't contain a variable. alert("See below");
I think checking the box for Default value is equal to a true.
I think the table has to been empty or rows have to have the same default value for it to be visible.
I am experiencing large PDFs as well. My database is 600MB with 30 completed documents.

I had this happen and I fixed it today. I had to recreate the role_id (foreign key to the role_id table) column in the users table.
I used PGAdmin to create the foreign key in the database itself. I think snapshotting your saltcorn instance (using the saltcorn admin tools), then deleting and restoring would solve this...
It would nice to be a static view or page to show instead of 'No row selected' as an option to explain to the user.
Update: I did rename a few tables and it broke the "relations". I had to go through the registry and update the table names manually.
When I embed a view in a view I get a "warning no relations" which is true but I am unable to add my extra state formula as the selected...
