Support for lowpan/wpan radio interfaces

Hello, It's possible to not use SOCK_RADIO or SLIP_RADIO as the only ways to access the 6lowpan network (send and receive rpl messages as the root node)? I've read relate issues here but it seems not clear. I'm using a AT86RF233 radio from openlabs. With the current linux kernel support, it is very easy to get a functional lowpan0/wpan0 to behave like a normal ethernet interface. I'm not worried in external internet access yet, just a simple setup to read the network trough 6lbr locally would be great.
