Rethink is blocked by home network routers
RethinkDNS is blocked / throttled / starved by my Fritzbox - and going by chatgpt, several other common home network routers in their default configuration.
Symptoms: Websites don't load or only after several refreshes, or incoming Signal messages "hang" indefinitely - even with an out-of-the-box block-nothing Rethink config or with universal bypass. As soon as I switch to mobile networking, everything works fine again, and also when I remove Rethink from the Android VPN config.
Apparently, home routers seem to block unknown / atypical VPN traffic in an attempt to block VPN endpoints that might get around their firewall. The workaround is to enable Teredo traffic and also to move the cellphone to the default "unlimited" profile in the Fritzbox
This might be a contributing cause to #2243, though that issue also happens on mobile network.
I would guess this issue is so common (and frustrating to debug) that it might be a good idea for RethinkDNS to address it: either preferrably some workaround, or some "test if your home network is configured correctly" button in the config, or a way to autodetect the problem and warn the user.
Versions: latest Grapheneos and Rethink Fdroid version t.
Still using Version ...n, the problem seems to outlive actual updates.
Workaround (only if you are connected in fritz router local WiFi): Proxy/Section OTHER/Setup HTTP(S) CONNECT Proxy App: [your browser] Hostname: http://169.254.1.1 (Router emergency IP).
Save it, but disable the setting afterwards.
Seems illogical, but it is working on 3 different Pixel phones (8, 8 Pro, 6) in 3 different networks using AVMs Fritz!Box router. I don't want to close the issue, but the selction cannot be changed?!
