Future feature: Why is there no way to be Private?

Open emyoulation opened this issue 3 years ago • 2 comments

The Privacy options for the view are all about how to indicate the Choice state of privacy... with no option to respect the Privacy in the View.

Could there be a "Show Placeholder when Private" option?

So if a text element is marked as Private, instead of the data it shows the italicized "private+ data name"; icons are simply omitted.

for for a Person marked Private at the top level, the panel is simply marked "private person"; if a Birth event is marked private, then the Birth line reads: "Birth private event"; if there are 16 citations but 3 are private, it counts as 13 citations.

Such a Privacy option would allow sharing a screen capture without half an hour of redacting in a paint program. And it would support sharing tutorial videos.

This seems to be a duplicate of issue #64

My initial take is that this is actually quite a bit of work to pull off for what I see as very little return on the investment.

For example, for indicators they are simple, check the length of a list. For this every single object needs to be instantiated and checked. For objects like events and media you have to consider the references and the actual objects, and so forth.

Most people won't use or have a use for it, they're likely not using Gramps to show the genealogy to others outside immediate family and if they are they are doing so with other tools like Gramps.js or the Narrated Web stuff or the soon to be released Wordpress plugin. They're using it to record and track their own research.

I'm not saying that things like privacy are not important, they certainly are. And a mode like that would make it easier to insure records are set the way you want if you are going to publish them online, assuming the online mechanism has all the same logic in it to render them that way which is a big assumption.

You're right. Duplicate. (I must have too many pans in the fire again.)
