Migrate to `esm` convention

Hello @cascornelissen 👋

As discussed together, here is a draft pull request for ESM migration: there was a need to update/upgrade packages before doing this, so be sure to run npm i on your side, I am using NodeJS 22 as well on a Ubuntu 24.04 WSL distribution over W11 x64.

It is still a draft because library is working fine when importing, but looks tests are now failing... if you have some time to dive into and starting to reviewing, and check the failing tests, it would be nice 🚀

I need to focus on different projects right now before Christmas vacations, let me know if you have any questions!
