What are Parts 1-4?

Open maneesha opened this issue 7 months ago • 6 comments

Throughout the lesson, we refer to Parts 1, 2, 3, and 4. I am assuming those refer to the four half day segments of the training, but that is not explicitly defined anywhere.

We do have it defined in one place: https://carpentries.github.io/instructor-training/instructor/index.html (in the scheduling note) but that should possibly go somewhere additional.

we can copy that language, just need to decide where?

I see it is in the schedule as well. I missed seeing it like that as I was probably expecting the parts to be more prominently displayed somewhere, so they stand out as headings, instead of looking like episode titles. If most other people are ok with it as it is, I am fine with closing this issue.

To make them headings, I think is a great idea, but it would require either duplicating content (which risks letting things get out of sync maintenance wise) or workbench updates, since the schedule is auto-generated.

We could put a small note in the welcome episode, but that already has 4 main themes, which I do not think are a 1:1 mapping to the parts, so that might confuse things?

that could be a good place to put a note about it outside of the instructor view.

I don't like a solution that duplicates content. I also think we should stay consistent with the workbench styling. Since each part has an "End" in the list of episodes, maybe create a pseudo-episode that is the "Start" of each part? That has the drawback of making the episode list look longer.

If this isn't a big deal to other users of this curriculum, we can close this.

My 2 cents is that it's better how it is than trying to add more material (and risk increasing cognitive load) or episodes (which I already kind of get annoyed at the lunch etc episodes). Anyone from @carpentries/trainers-leadership want to weigh in on what's most helpful?

I think a "schedule only" episode title that could be specified could help. If we could specific it in the configurations toc, move any exercises in those "break" episodes to the previous or next episode and then the breaks would only render in the schedule, not as a separate page in the actual lesson. This is a workbench feature, not a thing we would implement here, but I can put the issue in if people think that would be helpful.

The parts evolved from the yesterday/tomorrow and morning/afternoon references as being an improvement and accommodation of the 4 half day trainings. I just had the thought that better local (to this repo) solution is to replace all of the textual references to parts with either:

  • a specific episode cross reference OR
  • a list of episodes (also with links)

We could do that replacement in this repo either an alternative or complement to the workbench feature idea above
