Sample pre/post-workshop survey and survey results could be a useful resource

Open Denubis opened this issue 4 years ago • 5 comments

Today when we were coving workshop prep, one student wondered about the nature of the pre-workshop survey. It'd be great to have a sandbox survey and a sample result page so trainers can talk through the nuances of parsing the pre-workshop survey for lesson prep.

in building skill with feedback we have links to the question text

There's a partial excerpt in a blog post announcing the new format.

@fmichonneau is there a slug to a survey with fake data we could use in IT?

Just thinking about how I used the postworkshop survey in the ttt, some discussion on how to read the surveys and how to use them as a summative assessment from the perspective of the instructors could be quite interesting. ("How do we tell if our workshop fulfilled the needs of the learners? How do we figure out what single thing we need to focus on to improve next time?") and other questions. Not sure how to turn this into an exercise, but maybe: here are two pre/post-workshop pairs. What went well? What went poorly? What summary would you give to the host? How would you use this as the start of a debrief with your fellow instructors and helpers?

At the end of the day, the question might be: "How do we turn this survey pair into effective feedback for building skill?" (And I confess I don't have the faintest idea)

There are now sample versions of the results of the pre- and post-surveys for:

These are really drafts, as I quickly generated some data to make this work but didn't put any thoughts into the pedagogical aspects of it. I like @Denubis suggestion for an activity and would welcome better underlying data.

Linking #1298 to this discussion.

I think we could still welcome more advice on how to use them, but we now have some mock results?

I think the purpose of the pre-workshop survey is to let the instructor have something in mind regarding the level of knowledge and experience on a specific topic (e.g. Unix Shell, Python, etc.), therefore, the instructor can adjust the teaching pace based on the survey. In my university, the post-workshop survey is normally provided by the Postgraduate Research Office, I can share the generic questions here if anyone finds them useful.

  1. To what extent did you find the online training helpful? (1-5)
  2. To what extent did you find the online training enjoyable? (1-5)
  3. To what extent did you find the online training relevant? (1-5)
  4. What worked well about this session? (open question)
  5. What would have made it better? (open question)
  6. What were you hoping to gain from this online training? (open question)
  7. Did you achieve these objectives? (Yes or No)
  8. Where did you hear about this training session? (With options provided)
  9. Do you have any further comments about this online training or the PGR student training programme in general? (open question)

We also conduct a regular HPC training effectiveness study for the HPC/Unix Shell training to see the difference in HPC usage before and after the training.
