Conflicting information about logo policy & colors
In the section on the logo policy, we say "The colours of the “wrench mark” can be modified to what is appropriate for your domain/region..." but then later say "using the wrenchmark with the colours of another organisation" is prohibited. These directives seem to be in conflict with each other.
Thanks @maneesha for bringing this up.
I would also like to bring in @kariljordan @elletjies as this is ultimately for all of CET to determine.
I do not quite interpret this as a conflict, as it seems to me to say:
- The colours of the wrenchmark can be changed to reflect regional colours (essentially, the colours on the flag of the region), but NOT colours of an organisation associated with that subcommunity.
An example I've just made up could be something like this:
- The wretchmark can be changed to blue and yellow for the "Ukrainian Carpentries" subcommunity, where the colours represent the flag of the Ukraine.
- However, it would be unacceptable for the wretchmark to carry the very same colours if they were derived from an organisation that is affiliated with that subcommunity. For example, if there was a "Python Software Foundation Carpentries" subcommunity.
- What makes the distinction is from where are the colours derived - a regional symbol or an organisational/institutional one.
- To help us clarify the source of the colours is the name of the subcommunity, which is to be reflected as part of the adapted logo as per our policy.
I'm not sure if this helps or what you all think.
That example makes sense to me. So maybe this sentence needs updating?
- "using the wrenchmark with the colours of another organisation"
Should it be "using the wrenchmark with the colours of an existing subcommunity's logo"?
We say that adapting colors to your "domain/region" is acceptable. Regional colors could be national flag colors but I could imagine other colors being associated with a region based on cultural norms. I don't know of examples of colors that are associated with a domain. I think of domain in this context as an area of interest or study and I don't know what domain colors would be allowed in this case. Do we have examples of domain colors?
Also, about "no added shapes" allowed - are we in violation of that policy ourselves as we put The Carpentries logo inside other shapes for the lab and incubator?
One more question about the topic of logos. The logos page says The Carpentries, Software Carpentry, and Data Carpentry are trademarked. Does this mean Library Carpentry is not?
I suggest we give concrete examples say something like colours of a flag, coat of arms etc and where we say this is not allowed, also give concrete examples.
