@ErinBecker This is what we currently have in the handbook https://docs.carpentries.org/topic_folders/regional_communities/carpentries_en_latinoamerica.html#traducciones-translations

Do we have documentation anywhere else that should be incorporated into the handbook?

Hi @ErinBecker Given the new internationalisation slack channel and other interest in lesson translations, is there anything you want to include here?

We can link to the new slack channel. Other than that, let's hold off on making formal documentation for this process, as @fmichonneau will be integrating translation capabilities into the new lesson template.

Let's keep this open though, so we know to update it later once the lesson template is ready.

@zkamvar and @fmichonneau Do you want to keep this open?

should we invite the carpentries-jp and carpentries-it to write sections similar to what we have for carpentries-es here?

fmichonneau avatar Apr 16 '21 15:04 fmichonneau

@fmichonneau Sure -- who would we check with about that?

maneesha avatar Apr 16 '21 20:04 maneesha

maybe it's best to point folks in the internationalization channel to this so they can write sections for their respective communities?

Tagging @zkamvar and @tobyhodges as I'm not sure who might be reponsible for this. Do we want to keep this open?

Should this move to workbench? (similar to https://github.com/carpentries/sandpaper/issues/616)

@tobyhodges @froggleston Should this move to sandpaper? (similar to https://github.com/carpentries/sandpaper/issues/616)

Please leave the issue here. I think some content dedicated to internationalisation/localisation belongs in the handbook, even though we do not have the capacity to formally support these efforts as much as we would like to. At the moment it is knowledge only available to those who find the right channel on Slack and are willing to ask questions.

Joel Nitta has previously written a guide for using CrowdIn and his dovetail tool to create and maintain localised versions of lessons, and we had discussed adding this to the handbook alongside a description of the current state of i18n in The Carpentries. I think he suggested a blog post too, which would be very welcome. I will reach out to him and invite him/offer support to do so.

@froggleston and @tobyhodges will be discussing this more in 2026.
