Feedback from 2021-09-21
Elvina Gountouna delivered to new IGC postgraduate students with helper Alison Meynert, on 2021-09-21.
Started 13.30 and finished at 16.30, with a 5 minute break after data management and a 10 minute break after collaboration. We skipped Keeping Track of changes and Manuscripts. More than half of the students had no to little coding experience and about half said it would not be needed in the studies.
Instructor feedback:
- Prevention of data corruption - asked about checksums, compression
- Discussion of sensitive data to move into data management episode
- Skipped most of collaboration episode - only did a discussion on what makes a good collaboration
- Intro timing accurate
- Data management timing 55 minutes
- Sharing of data locations - scientific communications on lab website
- Software timing 40 minutes
- Collaboration - discussion only plus intro to README files about 15 minutes
- Project organization timing 30 minutes
- README files could probably go into project organization
Student Feedback:
-
Great content but could be condensed into a one-hour session.
-
Content was very helpful. Would have like to see more examples of project organization and filenaming for different datatypes and project types. Some discussions took more time than necessary.
-
Appreciated the active discussions. Designing a course that is suitable for such a diverse audience is difficult and I think important points were covered. I agree with some of the above feedback that some exercises could be a little shorter. For example, I am not sure how useful manual sorting of files is, if some people might not know what these files represent.
Thank you for this @egountouna and @ameynert!
I will have a look at some edits here tomorrow.
