visual mode: blinking cursor, text highlighting

The most recent updates to Janus caused a change in the way visual mode highlights text. The most troublesome change is that the cursor blinks which causes me to often be off by one in my selections. Also, although I don't know the specifics, the text highlight coloring is less readable, in my opinion. I recognize that the janus project may not be concerned with these issues, but at the very least could anyone point me to the settings that may have changed to cause these issues?

I was going to file a related issue about the default colors / config for the cursor and highlighting. It's very hard to read sometimes, since words that are highlighted are barely readable (yellow background on green text doesn't work well). Also the cursor is barely visible when it's right next to highlighted text.
