$10k project idea #10 - Sitewide Accessibility Reviews & aXe-core

Open mgifford opened this issue 6 years ago • 2 comments

Websites need an easy way to evaluate their sites for site-wide accessibility problems. There are commercial tools that do this, but it would be more powerful, secure and customizable if there were an open source tool that could easily be leveraged.

There are tools like pa11y & aXe-core which can be used, but more work is needed to document this and ensure that it is easier for people developing sites in the government to set up. Perhaps there is a means to bundle it into a docker solution that can be more easily distributed.

Update on issue from May 2020

#10 — Site-wide Accessibility Reviews, GDS and CDS are both looking at this. We’re developing our own framework for it too. A lot of additional work is needed though. From our preliminary work it is clear that government sites have lot more work they need to do to achieve WCAG 2.0 AA requirements.

This is the GDS project https://github.com/alphagov/accessibility-monitoring

I think CDS is working on some axe based initiatives too, but this is one using Google's Lighthouse https://github.com/cds-snc/lighthouse-scan-monitor
