squirt + noscript != fun
I found I couldn't read a wide range of sites, when I was running noscript. I had to turn off Noscript for any site I wanted top read before squirt would work, I suspect that is an issue with other people as well
the parser seemed to have an issue with colon before a number so 0.314 is fine but .314 stops the reader in its tracks
for example I was reading ironically http://lifehacker.com/the-truth-about-speed-reading-154250839
it reads fine in this text "Let's start by taking a look at different methods of speed reading before we dig into what does and doesn't work about it. Different Methods of Speed Reading
The Truth About Speed Reading
Before we can talk about speed reading, we need to lay down the specifics of how we tend to read and comprehend text normally. Slate breaks down what we know about reading:
When you factor out the amount of time spent thinking through complex and unfamiliar concepts—a rarity when people read for pleasure—reading is an appallingly mechanical process. You look at a word or several words. This is called a "fixation," and it takes about"
but it stops dead there unable to parse " .25 seconds on average. You move your eye to the next word or group of words. This is called a "saccade," and it takes up to about .1 seconds on average. After this is repeated once or twice, you pause to comprehend the phrase you just looked at. That takes roughly 0.3 to 0.5 seconds on average. Add all these fixations and saccades and comprehension pauses together and you end up with about 95 percent of all college-level readers reading between 200 and 400 words per minute."
It locks up and doesn't give a results page
still amazingly useful despite all the hassle
A manual to how you use the app might be good idea I didn't understand for a while how the controls work: "that I could stop and start it, skip back by 10 seconds or change the word speed"
it's a javascript bookmarklet. why would you expect it to work with noscript turned on?
i'm sorry—shouldn't have been so dismissive. you gave a lot of thoughtful feedback here and i appreciate that. i assumed noscript was tantamount to turning javascript off. it's a domain-based blacklist?
thanks for the apology its the first right thing that has happened in 36 hours - so very much appreciated
Noscript gives a very fine degree of control of what you want block and not block
but I'm not certain its all javascript or just some, some sites seemed to cope a lot better than others but I'm not a coder
Oh and can I say thanks again for squirt - i suspect this sort of RSVP type reader is going to become a standard solution for people with dyslexia - in the same way as GTD type apps are a god send to people with ADD (like me)
thanks again for replying
okay, i'll have a look later. thanks for the tip, and again for the feedback!
