Hi,

would adding a mode string when using vi-search require much work ?

There already is a / or ? displayed when in search mode (depending which direction in history you're searching), but I take it you mean allowing a custom one yes?

well, / or ? are displayed but after the prompt. Not in place of the + or : (or custom string) It makes it quite easy to confuse a / in insert-mode and a / in command-mode. I though another custom string could help here.

Since it haven't been merged yet, would it be possible to update the source code of bash to 4.4.X please :) ?

@dannycolin I've pushed a modestrs-4.4 branch that builds a patched version of bash 4.4/readline 7.0. checkout that branch, do a git submodule update to point to the corresponding readline branch, and build.
