Autoconnection example from manual just fails

I'm trying to do a basic Calf setup — unlike Carla continuous mode, plugins channels are directly exposed to Jack. I tried the autoconnection feature (! argument) but it just doesn't work.

It's not a pipewire bug. I have see the same behavior with pulse + jack (no pipewire). However, if you open a empty calf rack then add the desired plugins, then configure connections, Calf Rack saves the connections MOST of the time.
