Suggestion: secret switches

There was a mod for 1.7.10 called Torch Levers, but now it seems to be dead and I don't know any similar mods for latest Minecraft versions. I think that secret switches would fit your mod's medieval theme.

So could you add buttons/levers disguised for torches, books and loose bricks?

Maybe. I'll have to decide whether or not I feel like it fits with my vision for the mod. Thanks for the suggestion, though!
