Links for DOI

Open yaronf opened this issue 5 years ago • 2 comments

Hi, when a reference consists only of a DOI, could you, in addition to the seriesInfo element, also emit a target element to link to the DOI URL (https://doi.org/10.1007/3-540-45661-9_21)? AFAIK it is simply a concatenation of https://doi.org/ with the actual DOI. This would make the DOI so much easier to use. Thanks!

Hi Yaron,

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm on the road right now, so will only get to this next week.

But I'm wondering if most people actually want that redundant link in there. Wouldn't that be something for the link generators such as the tools. Ietf.org HTMLifier? Would you want to see doi links on RFCs, too?

The technical part is that the references are generated on the tools server (using a part of kramdown-rfc). So this change would need to be done on the server, or I'd need to post-process the info. In the former case, it would be more work to turn showing the target into a selectable option.

Hi Carsten,

No, I think showing the link for RFCs would not be useful, and that's why I would prefer a solution at the kramdown level rather than in the link generators. For RFCs, a hypothetical DOI link would be identical to the RFC Editor link that's already there.

Thanks!
