You should go back to Tree Style Tabs. It's an excellent add-on and I heartily recommend it. Given how long it's been, realistically speaking, we probably aren't going to implement...
Oh yeah, that was a while ago. The options are now in package.json, as you said.
It doesn't look like anyone has had time to work on it, so no, it's not likely to come anytime soon.
(I could replicate this with cracked.com, and took a quick look, but have no idea what's going on there…)
