The docs for the various string types have a lot of overlap and are hard to parse due to all the references to other ISO standards.

  • Derived from (1) Step P.41 label
  • Step serializations (2) P.21, (3) P.28
  • (4) ISO 10646 Unicode
  • (5) ISO 8859-1...-16

Similar to what we have for IFC Guid, it would be good to expand the string-type docs into a separate page where we discuss the various encodings, charsets and serializations and then reference this page from the string types.

The current docs are also not fully correct. P28 being XML could use any charset, not just the ones listed.

agreed - it is a source of confusion - there was another issue about escaping the " character in my very old "IFC2x Model Implementation Guide" there is a page or two about the topic, it could be a starting point for such a docs - see page 19ff
