What feature do you want?

An optional button to prune the article list of read articles instead of doing it automatically. Button can be turned on or off in settings.

Why do you want this feature?

Sometimes when reading an article I go back to the article list and the article that I just read is no longer in the list. I like the "mark as read" feature but pruning the read articles from the list automatically is sometimes not what I want to happen. Would be better to have control over this operation.

I wouldn't understand such a feature, I guess. But if I understand your request correctly, it could be solved by a functionality something I'd like to have as well: a possibility to return from an item keeping it in the unread state.

Web Nextcloud News has it, I think. (Or was it a different web RSS reader I used?) A "Keep unread" button/checkbox in tge item detail. It could be in the three-dot menu, return you to the main screen but keeping the item unread (allowing you to reopen it later or mark as read manually).
