[Question] Recreation Projects

Open jasonmerc opened this issue 2 years ago • 7 comments

This is not an issue with your code, just a question.

I saw a project that recreates AOL 4.0 in Chromium (https://github.com/erfg12/AOL_4.0_Emu) and was wondering if you knew of anyone doing something similar with MSN Explorer here... whether it be the old 7.x verison or the new 10.x/11.x ones.

I would also like to see this become a reality :) I actually recreated the main window in HTML with the assets from MSN Explorer 7.x once and called it RLD Explorer: afbeelding

If you are interested I can drop these files as a starting point in another repository.

Do you have the Mars file archive extractions from later versions of Explorer as well?

I remember a really long time ago I got MSN Explorer CDs for I think V10, but I left them at home. I don't pay for the service anymore but those disks SHOULD have the full browser on them as an offline installer... It might take me a while to get them but I can get them to you if you'd like.

Oh and to your point, yes please drop your extracted files in another repo. I'm not a programmer, but I'm sure someone out there would be able to do something with all of this.

I do not own those no. The 7.x version is easy to come by as it was bundled with Windows XP. Version 11.x can still be downloaded here: https://membercenter.msn.com/download.aspx?lm=en-us Is version 10.x much different?

10.x still has the old butterfly branding in it (the rainbow one) if you want to go for that classic look. 11.x is when it changed to the solid blue and the classic design starts to clash with itself.

I'll have to test that installer, but I remember from the old days that the installer you linked is actually NOT for the full browser. That's just an installer for the installer wizard (yes, confusing I know). If you want the actual browser files to be downloaded on your computer you have to progress further in the setup wizard, and for that you need a valid subscription.

However, like I was saying I should have a legit Offline Installer CD somewhere that should have everything on that disk. I don't know how it's encrypted or compressed, if it is at all, but I do know I still have those 10.x disks somewhere.

Oh I wasn't aware of that :) thanks for the clarification!

Posting this up here, it looks like I found an archive of some MSN Explorer CDs on the Internet Archive. I'm downloading them as I see them, but in the meantime I think this one is MSN 8 if you want to try it out with your extractor tool as well.

EDIT: nevermind, those are v6 and v7. Still looking.

EDIT 2: Looks like there are some .mar files in the setup files themselves. Perhaps I was wrong. I will post links for the versions I found.

MSN 8, the first one where you had to pay for it: https://web.archive.org/web/20121114194747/https://download.microsoft.com/download/5/F/8/5F8A4821-EB6B-469E-85EC-6E29A67C4E60/msnsetup_min.exe

Hello, I wanted to follow up from before. I got CD rips of MSN 10.0.

I just ripped the MSN Premium 10.0 disk to an ISO, but apparently I already had an MSN Dial Up 10.0 rip from a few years back... oops, my fault. These might be the same. They appear to be the same filesize but I have yet to download them and do an md5sum to confirm.
