[Android] Add custom search engines

Open timchilds opened this issue 2 years ago • 1 comments

Summary The feature to add a custom search engine differs on iOS vs Android.

iOS: there is an option under settings where the user can input a search url with parameters. e.g. yahoo.com/search?q=%s. Android: there's an option under settings where it shows recently visited search engines, these can be selected.

Having both options is probably the best course of action here. This way, if users want to add a very specific search engine they have that option (the iOS flow). But for users who are just trying to quickly make some other engine their default, the option to select from recently visited is ideal.

Requirements TBD

Priority P3. Android user questions are fairly rare re: how to add a custom search engine. One for the backlog in case this becomes a larger issue down the line.

I can't add my search engine to brave on android. I've tried visiting the page many times, searching on it tons, but it never shows up in my recently visited list to add as my default search engine on brave android. would someone be able to help me?

I've also noticed this doesn't work in Android. My desktops browsers are setup to use my self hosted SearXNG, but I can't get my phone to do it. Would love to see this implemented

This missing functionality is the only reason I have to use other browsers.

Bromite does it. Mull does it.

Self-hosted Searxng user here.

Instead of solely relying on OpenSearch, allow the user to "Add Custom Search Engine" by way of the query string like the other browsers.

Edit 20230416: Brave Android Stable seems to now work properly with OpenSearch.

I agree, I think there should be a way to add your own preffered engine with queries instead of the recently visited thing.
