Weird Updating Bug

I noticed that this happens the most with cow grinders setup like so:

cow crap

It's happening with other things as well, however Cow Grinders seem to notice the issue the most. The pistons will either extent or won't extent until they have a block placed near them updating them (such as the sister piston activating causing it to reset). This seems to happen with other redstone (Wire, Torches, etc) where it will just freeze up and stop receiving updates until it get's updated / reset by something else.
