add VPN to home menu
if possible, for international users, it would be very useful to cut back the number of clicks to start a VPN session. Allowing VPN (a switch) to be placed on the home page would be a great addition to consider in a future release.
this has been done in the development branch https://github.com/boxeehacks/boxeehack/pull/143 other updates/fixes have been made in this fork https://github.com/cigamit/boxeehack but it doesn't include the VPN toggle feature
Thanks for the email Jakob. I will check the dev branch in the next couuple of days. However, a toggle 'switch' for the VPN on the main page would definitely be a great addition to the SW. Anyone, either local or international could make use of the switch. Today, you need to 'click' quite a bit to get to the VPN switch.

after playing around with it I found out that you need to install from this repository
https://github.com/mike3y/boxeehack/tree/development to get the VPN Button
thank you for the suggestion Jakob. Currently I have version 1.4.6. If I install from the repository the version you suggest to gain the VPN switch, will I get an older or a newer version? Also, should I follow the same instructions as per the installation of version 1.4.6 via the USB key? Thanks in advance for your help.

it looks like that fork is based on 1.4.6 , so you loose no features compared to the normal boxeehacks. as for installation, its exactly the same.
After installation, you need to connect the first time to the VPN using the normal menu, after that the vpn on/off button works.

Forgive the naivety, but I'm using version 1.4.6. How do I add these features to this install. Do I simply add this repository and then the app, or do I have to download and install manually. Since the whole family uses this system (including a very demanding 3 yo) I don't want to have to reset back by re-installing if this doesn't go well but I REALLY want the VPN toggle feature.

@Oolong666 it is not a boxee app you install, its a different version boxeehacks.
To install follow the steps here http://boxeeplus.com/#moreinfo But instead of step 1 download this file instead https://github.com/mike3y/boxeehack/archive/development.zip
Reinstall of boxeehack should not reset settings ( I updated from 1.4.6 to this specific version and everything worked for me).

Thanks, wasn't sure but I'd guessed this. It's good to hear that it won't reset my settings.
So installed the one from the Archive, but it doesn't include the Dec releases (including the VPN toggle). How do I go about getting the Dec development release. It looks like it's been merged, but not sure where the install files are (or do you have to DL them individually from GitHub?).

Go to Settings -> Booxe+ Hacks and check the "Show VPN toggle button" checkbox
Checked through that and didn't see this option although the install finished fine. Check the date on the install files and they are all from 11/02/2013. Not the Dec release as seems to be indicated
I installed from exactly that repository, not sure whats different in your case.

As I found a few moments, I have tried installing the SW from the link you provided (below), but it does not seem to provide the version with the Switch.
I have installed it twice (just in case). Connected OK to the VPN . Logged on to a remote YouTube site.
Went back to the Home page with the remote, but could not see an icon (switch). I even rebooted the box a couple of times with no avail.
Is it possible that the link does not provide the correct branch/installation for the VPN switch?
I am new to github. How do I go from Branch #143 (as you explained below where the VPN switch resides) to the actual code?
The fork you provided below with the updates/fixes does not appear to provide the VPN switch.
Could you please point me to the download with the SW that includes the VPN switch ?

Perhaps someone at Github for the Boxeehack could explain (in simple words) how to find the version number for a branch development.
This way I can install the correct version of the boxeehack that includes the VPN switch (that I am looking for).
@David sent a link for branch #143 and I can see that inside the directory "hack" and its sub-dir with fixed VPN scripts.... is this the correct version to install?
How do I find out the version # so that I can compare it with the one that I have already installed in my Boxee.

Honestly, I can't find a unique identifier in the install scripts to distinguish one from another. Not sure how they are documenting this, as I would assume it to be in the header of the script......
Same here. When I'll have a few minutes, I'll try installing again and will post the question: how to distinguish among all those builds. Also, is there a plan to merge all of the working forks into a release of the Sw?

you may have noticed there is no more boxeehack team. over 200 issues opened on this repository and no updated for 11 month. much like the boxxeebox, boxxeehacks over.
One popular fork (with updates) that has been developed further is https://github.com/cigamit/boxeehack they have a forum here http://boxeed.in/forums/ Their version does not include the VPN Toggle changes.

There are no identifiers/version number as you mention because there was no official release of a version with the vpn toggle feature .

It is unfortunate that even Boxeehack is out. Perhaps, someone, someday soon will pick up the code and add some more features and make it a more usable box. I will try again reinstalling the SW and look for the VPN switch.
Do you know is someone created a fork of the SW with changes to the built-in screensaver-removing the annoying panning and zooming of every image?
