saving dashboards is unclear

If I refresh an unsaved dashboard I lose it. But if I make changes to a search on a previously saved dashboard, are they... saved automagically? I tried clicking "Save Dashboard" after modifying a widget and it complained I already had a dashboard with that name, so not sure about the widget status.

Nope, changes to a dashboard are not saved automatically. Did you not get the option to over-write the original dashboard when you attempted to re-save it?

Yeah I figured that out; the wording there seemed a little unnecessary, given that the user is currently viewing the dashboard they'd like to save. wouldn't "Are you sure" suffice there, instead of prompting with a "name dashboard" and an overwrite dialog? surely the 95% use case is editing an existing dashboard, not branching an existing one and saving it with a new name?

You never know. I personally prefer the current presentation and the option to branch.

Actually, in our environment here the predominant use case when editing a saved dashboard is to save it with a different name. Users will create a dashboard and use that as the base for tweaking and saving variations of it (dev vs. prod, front end vs. back end, etc.).
