Intermittent USB

I've been trying to upgrade the firmware on the V5 shield but the onboard USB connector is intermittent, it shows up for a few seconds then disappears. I haven't found anything about standalone firmware updating and I've even tried with an original UNO (the type B USB connector gets in the way of the V5 USB connector) Is there a process for updating the firmware on a V5 shield?

Don't connect the Arduino to it when you try to update firmware. Also make sure you have a LiPo battery with proper polarity (red wire should be on the left side of the JST connector when you plug it into the board). Please see this wiki page for details and to install the USB drivers.
