Badge lights up intermittently, then dies

Open Gitoffomalawn opened this issue 6 years ago • 4 comments

I bought two dragonfly badges last DEFCON, but only got to turning on the second one this week. There seems to be something wrong with it though:

When I turned it on for the first time (using the batteries that came with), it lit up for about two seconds and died. Trying to turn it on again failed. So I put it down for a few days. After a few days, I tried again, same thing happened. Tried other batteries, but it still wouldn't turn on. I've tried three different sets of batteries so far, none worked. The other badge works just fine with any of the batteries.

Do you have any ideas as to what might be going on, and what I can do to fix it?

Hmm. Does it completely turn off?

Sorry for my late reply.

Yes, it turns completely off. I gave it another try a few days back, and it turned on again only to turn off again after about an hour. New batteries did not solve the problem.

Whenever the badge does turn on, it seems to do so for a random amount of time, before shutting down. Then it won't turn back on, until having "rested" a few days (maybe hours, haven't tried measuring the time increments necessary). Then the problem repeats.

@borgel Have you had time to look into this issue yet?

Unfortunately I don't have any more information. My guess is that there was some damage to the power regulator (probably ESD?) at some point. It's on the small side, but there are only 6 pins. Do you have the tools/are you up to try a repair? I'm happy to send a few spares.
