update examples using graphviz

This is a start at fixing bug #146.

The kruskal-telephone example has been essentially rewritten. I have attempted to keep the idiosyncrasies in the original, so far as I understand them. The rest of bug #146 will follow.

I'm particularly interested in this PR since graphviz needs some attention. Just address my review comment and I'll call in to get this merged.
