Federation doesn't seem to work for books and reviews

Describe the bug

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding how Bookwyrm works, but whatever books or reviews I add to bookwyrm.social don't seem to show up on other instances.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Add a book or review on bookwyrm.social
2. Wait a few days/weeks/months
3. Go to any other instance mentioned on https://joinbookwyrm.com/instances

Expected behavior

The added books and reviews are visible on any of the other Bookwyrm instances.

Actual behavior

None of the added books and reviews are visible outside of bookwyrm.social.

Additional context

I can't find any books I added at the moment (not sure where to look), but here's some examples of books for which I've written reviews, where even the books themselves aren't found on the other instances:
