Update the Wiki Toolkit to be more Robust/extensive
The Wiki toolkit needs updated because it is very easily broken, and lacks lots of features that would be nice to have.
The wiki engine used within Act is Wiki::Toolkit, with Text::WikiFormat for the formatting. The versions installed on spectre (the current Act server) are Wiki::Toolkit v0.73 (2006-12-12) and Text::WikiFormat v0.79 (2007-06-28). There's a more recent version of Wiki::Toolkit available on the CPAN (v0.79, 2010-08-14), but I think there was a compatibility problem, which forced me to install the 0.73 version when we moved from profane to spectre. I'll have to make a test again, and see if this can be fixed.
It'd be really nice to see Act use Markdown. It's a saner language, and standardish (used on GitHub and elsewhere).
+1 for Markdown. But which flavor? GitHub? StackOverflow?
So we would need multi-engine support to support both old conferences sites (Text::WikiFormat based) and new ones with the new flavor.
Flavor-wise, I don't care. The flavor differences are minor. My Markdent module includes a dialect that supports tables based on syntax created by David Wheeler. That might be good.
Re: multi-engine - I don't think it'd be that hard to do one big conversion from the old to new format.
Also, the engine would need some ACT-specific extensions so support things like [user:foo]
