Document sub-buckets

I could not find documentation on how sub-buckets are handled behind the scenes. I'm looking to understand how well nested buckets will perform. Are there any caveats I need to know about (side effects of storing deeply nested buckets? Are the keys of all sub-buckets still indexed? Memory concerns?)
