ENH: Add some useful SUNDIALS user functions

These are some utility functions that I end up adding to each project that I work on, I figure that others might find some use for them.

I can see the usefulness. Discoverability of these is not great however. Small entry in doc? And perhaps one of the examples adapted to use it?
