Microsoft just released Ubuntu on Windows ...
How does this impact this project?
The same as anything Microsoft says. I'll believe it when it's available for download and it solves our issues. Trust me, I'd prefer to have MS do it. I'd also prefer they did it 10 years ago when it was a novel idea.
I'm using Ubuntu on Windows on one of my machines. It's not a direct competitor with GOW.
GOW provides the ability to use certain gnu utilities from within batch files, nmake and msbuild scripts, and so on. It understands native Windows paths.
Ubuntu on Windows provides a super high performance alternative to Cygwin. It runs the entire ubuntu userspace with apt-get. Whatever packages are available on Ubuntu are available for you. This means that you have the typical path translation problems -- since Ubuntu doesn't grok C:/.
