Radar not playing correctly at first

Open cfitz25 opened this issue 9 months ago • 9 comments

When i open the app or switch apps, the radar video doesnt update to the next image.

If i tap on the timelime first and then press play it will play correctly up to where i tapped but the images after that are just the last frame it had. This resets to not playing correctly when i switch or close the app though. EDIT: it also seems to start playing fine if i scroll it off the screen and wait for it to finish the loop, it starts fine on the next loop after it passes the spot it started at on activity load on

Hi! What you are experiencing is that probably the rain-viewer server simply blocked you because either your wifi connection was slow and it timed out, or you were trying to view too many frames in a short amount of time. I don't think it has to do with the specific frames. This is a known issue, and it probably has to do with the use of a free radar-api that has a much smaller server size, and hence the slowness, and lag. Other foss apps like weathermaster, that use the same api, have this same issue.

That is because of the caching. The first time you go through, it caches all the images, and the next time you go around they load a lot faster because they are already cached.

But i do want to implement some preloading of the frames, so that the switching between frames would be more smooth. But it's kind of difficult.

ahhh, yeah that doesnt sound very straight forward, definitely a minor issue too.

Thanks for the informative replies.

Okay, so this is not the preloading i was talking of, but a pretty significant (and unexpected) improvement nonetheless I was just checking out the app on a device that had animations totally turned off, and i noticed how much better the radar seemed to work. That lead me to suspect that maybe there was an animation when switching radar frames, that made it so laggy, and sure enough after a bit of searching i found a parameter that allowed me to remove the transition completely.

I think the before and after speaks for itself.

So v2.5.1 is released with the new changes like the one mentioned above. Could you verify if you're still experiencing the issue, or if it is fixed?

bmaroti9 avatar Jun 13 '25 19:06 bmaroti9

the original issue is still there, i think it is running smoother when it does play though

Yeah, I see what you mean. I have also experienced some of the lagging. I will keep this open then.

The same issue on Android 14, work only with weatherapi provider

@mrtaxi the radar has nothing to do with the weather provider, it's totally independent and uses the rain-viewer API instead.
