Great, thanks for the contribution!

I will wait for a bit and see if there are any other Indonesian users who would like to cross-check this translation. At the same time, will hire someone to check the translations! Thanks!

The goal of localization isn't to be an exact word-for-word translation, the goal of localization is to get the point or meaning across, even if it has to change the wording.

umpan isn't exactly a great word to describe what feeds does in Bluesky, kanal (channel), while an entirely different word, might help to describe it better for anyone used to YouTube channels.

Sure, a YouTube channel is a feed of videos that are made by a single user/creator/entity, but if you take away YouTube from the equation, a channel is simply a feed of things, they might be bound to a certain topic (which is why feeds has the hashtag/topic icon), but they are not bound to a single creator.

* `private` is a hard word to translate, we should avoid it when possible.

  * `private` here means something that's only visible to you, and selected users
  * `pribadi`, the word being used here, means something that's personal, as in, an individual account vs. a business account
  * TikTok uses `privat` (loan word), we should lean towards this when forced

Twitter already use pribadi as shown below when creating Twitter List (Daftar):

But I think privat is better, let's use it.

* `utas`, while it is the correct word for `thread`, should be avoided when possible.

  * It's not a very well-known word
  * With how it's being used right now, `utas` should only be used within places that actually involves threads being shown

Disagree, on Twitter, Utas or Utasan is already common word. In official Twitter docs, Utas is also used for thread https://help.twitter.com/id/using-x/create-a-thread

  * Other places like block/mute confirmation messages should use `posts` instead rather than `threads`

Could you give example which line that contain wrong translation? I think we shouldn't change thread into post if the original word is thread.

I've made some changes, notably post into postingan.

@danninov @mary-ext @Thinkbyte1024 How do we feel about the state of this localization right now? Are there any pending discussions to be resolved? Or is it good to be merged?

ansh avatar Jan 03 '24 14:01 ansh

It's currently 10pm here in ID, I'll try to do another pass tomorrow morning.

@danninov can you mark my comments as resolved? so it's clear that they've been discussed about

Sure, I've set it as resolved.

The only one that I'm still not sure is wheter we need to translate feed or not. I'll let @mary-ext to decided it

@danninov Do you use other apps in Indonesian? For example, I did the translations for Hindi and I kept a lot of english words because the translations weren't used often in other apps. Would be good to check other apps.

Yes, I'm mostly using Indonesian on several apps: Twitter, Whatsapp, Android etc, so I'm quite familiar with term used here.

danninov avatar Jan 03 '24 16:01 danninov

@danninov And do those apps use the word "Feed"?

ansh avatar Jan 03 '24 18:01 ansh

@ansh For my understanding, if the context in those apps are news related (for example RSS reader), then we can translate the word "Feed" into "Umpan Berita", but the word "Newsfeed" can also translated to "Umpan Berita".

The problem is, if we translate only the word "Feed" into "Umpan", this can lead to an ambiguous situation as "Umpan" can be referred to "Bait" or food related. So, why not just translate it into "Umpan Berita" (for the word "Feed") if the context is news related?

Hopefully this becomes clear, as I'm trying to explain the word "Feed" as best as I can. :-)

thinkbyte1024 avatar Jan 03 '24 18:01 thinkbyte1024

It might be ok to keep feeds untranslated for now since there's lack of consensus for this.
