rename "master" branch to "main"

This is the new GitHub convention (related to IETF memo).

I've done this change on other repos and it's pretty painless, cf. https://github.com/github/renaming

However it's not completely without consequence for folks who have the repo cloned or forked. Will leave this issue open for a bit just for awareness and discussion.
