Thanks for the report. Blokada consumes battery 2 times: when it downloads the lists and when it merges them. The more lists you enable, the more battery it uses, because the more processor time and memory required. You can configure this update frequency in the app. Apps that monitor the battery usage checks how much time an app was started/running, and calculates the value based on this information. In reality, Blokada uses about 14 mAh, what is very infinitesimal. If you sure Blokada consumes a lot of battery, follow this guide to save its log, open that on a notebook/PC and check for repetitive actions (VPN tunnel re-establishment in every minute, download of lists every minute or similar).

I went back to 4.4.4 and now battery drain has gone. 5.4.1 seems to be buggy.

But since V 4.4.4 the blockada notifciation in the drop down menu of statusbar doesn't disappear after closing my internet connection. It's always on. With 5.4.1 the blokada notification was gone when I shut down internet and came back when I turned it on again.

Could you provide some information to debug why the new version drained your battery more than the 4.4.4? Without information we can't do anything. How much mAh is the difference? How much time is the VPN restarted?

peterroth avatar Jan 29 '20 18:01 peterroth

Difficult to say. These two screenshots are from Version 4.5.1 Screenshot_20200125-112038_GSam Battery Monitor Pro Screenshot_20200125-111958_GSam Battery Monitor Pro

These from 4.4.4 Screenshot_20200130-151534_GSam Battery Monitor Pro Screenshot_20200130-151529_GSam Battery Monitor Pro

Version 4.5.1 holds the S10 much more active and drains battery. Besides this, 4.5.1 can't hold the vpn. After a while, I have to restart Blokada because it is deactivated. 4.4.4 drains no battery and stays always on without problems.

The strange thing is that Blokada 4.5.1 uses a lot of battery, especially in airplane mode. 4.4. doesn't use any battery in this mode only a little bit when online.

Blokada 4.5.1 triggers too much wakelocks. Screenshot above shows 50m since last full charging: 32,2 m wakelock time. --> So this version consumes on my S10 till 30% of Battery drain of all Apps. There are other people in German forums they have the same problem with S10 and the actual version of Blokada. Bolokada 4.4.1: 1d 17h since last full charge: 0,1 s (!) wakelock time

Did my hints help you?

Lavater avatar Feb 04 '20 15:02 Lavater

Hi,

having the same issue on my Pixel 3a (latest Android 10).

First noticed after upgrading to 4.5.1. With 4.5.0 I had +30h battery life With 4.5.1 it dropped down to +18h

Tried wiping Blokada off my phone and reinstalling via F-Droid (suggested in Blokada Telegram chat) -> Enhanced battery life dropping even further (+15h and still dropping).

If I can help with any further data please let me know, happy to track this down (will look into the logs as mentioned above this evening)

Can you please try to disable Smart List and check if you face the same battery drain (with 4.5.2, of course)?

peterroth avatar Feb 05 '20 14:02 peterroth

There are some more S10 (Android 10) users with this bug in a German forum. All are complaining about a strong battery drain since 4.5.1. I use 4.4.4 and it works very good. Only 0.6% battery consumption shown in GSAM Battery Pro. 4.5.1 consumes up to 30%.

Lavater avatar Feb 05 '20 18:02 Lavater

1.) On which German forum did you see those reports? 2.) Can you try disabling Smart List and check if then you face the same situation?

peterroth avatar Feb 05 '20 19:02 peterroth

Hey, upgrade to 4.5.2 and switching off Smart List had no impact - battery estimation stayed at ~+12h compared to the value before installing Blokada (with 4.5.0 and activated Smart List, I had a gain of ~+30h). Still owe you looking at the logs and the mAh Blokada is using - will provide the data asap.

meacu1pa avatar Feb 06 '20 08:02 meacu1pa

Update:

Installed AccuBattery and tracked the battery usage. Blokada is at 11.3 mAh after tracking battery usage for ~12 hours.

Estimated battery time for my Pixel 3a inside AccuBattery went back to the normal value I had before the issue. Built in Android battery estimation also counting up again. So it seems like Smart List was the hickup here.

Can I do anything more to help solve the problem? Switch Smart List back on to reproduce and post logs?

Anyways thanks for ur feedback @peterroth !

@domculpa Accu Battery only shows foreground battery consumption. If you use GSamBatteryPro with ADB right you can see the real consumption of battery für Blokada. Accu Battery never showed Blokada as a big consumer, but GSam shows 4.4.4 with only 0.6% of all App battery comsumption, 4.5.2 30% of all App battery usage.

Lavater avatar Feb 07 '20 21:02 Lavater

@Lavater thanks, can you check the consumption without Smart List?

peterroth avatar Feb 08 '20 07:02 peterroth

Yes, bug seems to be the new Smart List. Tested Blokada 4.5.2 without Smart List since one hour everything seems to be allright. Currently no difference to 4.4.4. I'll watch it a longer time and give you a feedback.

Lavater avatar Feb 08 '20 12:02 Lavater

Information: Last day 4.5.2 didn't drain battery without Smart List. But there's a little bug: If I shut down WIFI Blokada disappears out of task bar and came back. Same to 4.4.4. But if I start WIFI Blokada disappears out of taskbar and came back some Seconds later. In 4.4.4 Blokada stays active by starting WIFI - no disappearing and coming back. In 4.4.4 there's no gap of protection.

Lavater avatar Feb 09 '20 09:02 Lavater

Addendum: The behavior only occurs with WIFI, not in the data network. Login into data network doesn't close Blokada protection and restarts it.

Lavater avatar Feb 09 '20 12:02 Lavater

It seems to be a different issue, can you open a separate ticket for it and share the log (after redacting personal information)?

peterroth avatar Feb 10 '20 09:02 peterroth

@peterroth personally I'm in favor of a in-app section showing how much blokada has actually used. Once Android blamed 17% battery drain on blokada but 12% of that was actually YouTube music repeatedly trying to contact googleadservices.com for several hours in a row, non stop

Could you please clear out, the disrespect and entitlement is really starting to stink up the room

androidacy-user avatar Jul 26 '21 23:07 androidacy-user

I checked idgas01's comment and it lacked manner, was very disrespectful and didn't provide useful information, hance I deleted that. Don1T get it wrong: you can have an opinion and you can share that with us on any platform, but keep that clear.
