Do you have a zniffer available? Or a 500-stick lying around you're willing to permanently convert to one?
It would greatly help in diagnosing this. You need windows available and the process is a bit involved.

sniffer_ZW050x_USBVCP.hex I successfully converted a UZB3 at the time so clearly I found it somewhere there.
